An important seaside parish, Sainte Anne offers dream beaches and an ideal situation at the heart of Grande-Terre to discover the area’s many other wonderful beaches.
Hurricanes in 1928 and 1988 gave it a rough ride and there isn’t much to do in that parish. The recently installed waterfront boardwalk gives it a false sense of Riviera. Aside from its little handicraft village for shopping, Sainte Anne’s main attractions are its beaches. They are absolutely gorgeous: under the sun, you’ll be blinded by the white sand, a coral barrier keeps the waters calm and clear with turquoise.
The first beach is Caravelle just around Club Med. Not well indicated, you must walk the path across from the gas station. If you want an advice, don’t wait at the end of the dead end to park. At the end of the road, you can access the beach through a turnstile along the waterfront. You can practice all kinds of water sports, particularly sail boarding and surf in the coral barrier’s fairways. It’s a very valued beach and extremely crowded on weekends. The place is absolutely exceptional!
The downtown beach is also very beautiful. It is not necessary to stay in a pack near the entrance since it stretches on a long way, forming tiny coves. Vehicles must pay for access and parking. It’s also a very popular beach, particularly with the local population.
Further way down at the borough’s exit, Bois Jolan Beach is a wild gem; it’s a place attended by kite-surf lovers who benefit from the shallow lagoon. Certified trainers offer courses for beginners.
Right after Sainte Anne you’re in the countryside. Many fields, market gardening and cattle fill the landscape. Entering the land, Grands-Fonds is a tormented zone where hillocks and valleys follow one another with roads and ravines zigzagging. The soft slopes are used for agriculture and this is whehre the blancs-matignon live. Until recently these offspring of the white settlers who fled Victor Hughes’ persecution where completely self-sufficient and only married within the clan. Consanguinity did not improve their genetic heritage and many suffer from wrongs related to this plague. Little and discreet, meeting one of them is rare.
